Consumption of carbonated drinks adversely affect vitamin d absorbtion
The trend for the last few years shows an increasing consumption of carbonated drinks. They were considered as healthy drinks at the time they were first introduced. However, recent studies show that carbonated soft drinks are not as healthy as they are projected to be. The contents of these drinks like high fructose corn syrup, caffeine, etc are not beneficial for our health. Moreover, with increase in consumption of soft drink the consumption of healthier drinks like milk, 100% fruit juices, etc has gone down. Consumption of carbonated drinks has been seen to affect vitamin D absorption and calcium. It is thus associated to weakening of bones.
Laboratory studies suggest that carbonated drinks contain phosphoric acid which is a factor that causes hypocalcemia. Some studies also suggest that the increased intake of phosphorus in higher quantities also causes inhibition of 1?-hydroxylase. This is in turn leads to decrease in production of 1 ?-25-hydroxyvitamin D3. In simple terms it leads to reduction in vitamin D3. Overall the biological function of vitamin D is to maintain normal levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D also helps in absorption of calcium which is necessary to maintain strength of bone.
As the vitamin D absorption is affected, the risk of osteoporosis, hypertension, cancer and other autoimmune diseases also increases. As consumption of carbonated drinks also affects intake of foods with nutrients like calcium there are ill effects that can be seen due to it. Calcium is necessary for strong bones. However, when the body needs calcium, vitamin D is what helps in its absorption from the gastrointestinal tract into the body. This means that to get calcium and vitamin D, the intake of foods like milk, peas, salmons, etc should be more.
When the body is unable to get sufficient amount of calcium it may lead to the body striping calcium from the bones. This leads to weakening of bones. Milk fortified with vitamin D is available. If carbonated drinks replace drinks like milk, it leads to lack of nutrients like vitamin D and calcium that is required by our body. Carbonated drinks mainly those containing phosphoric acid have negative impact on bone density. Vitamin D deficiency may lead to impaired bone mineralization and bone softening diseases. Among children too, vitamin D deficiency may lead to rickets. It may also contribute to osteoporosis in adults.
It is very important to understand the importance of the effect of consumption of carbonated beverages. As these drinks have replaced nutritional foods which provide necessary nutrients like calcium, vitamins, proteins, it leads to overall imbalance in body system. This often leads to direct and indirectly affecting availability of nutrients to the body that it gets through the body mechanism.
As carbonated drinks and their phosphoric acid content affect vitamin D and phosphorous balance it is advisable to avoid their consumption. Replace them with healthier drinks like milk, 100% fruit juices, etc which can be beneficial for developing a healthier body. Carbonated drinks do affect vitamin D absorption and need to be avoided. Having them once in a while may not be harmful but you should always keep it in control.
